How Often Should You Get Pest Control in Florida?

7 min readBy SW Florida Pest Authority

If you moved to Florida from a northern state, you might be used to pest control being an occasional service: call when you see a problem, get a one-time treatment, and move on. Florida does not work that way. The warm, humid climate keeps pests active 12 months a year, and the question is not whether you need regular pest control, but how often.

After treating hundreds of Fort Myers homes, the answer for most homeowners is quarterly service. But the right frequency depends on your specific situation. Here is how to decide.

What this guide covers:

  • Why Florida homes need pest control more often than homes elsewhere
  • Quarterly vs. monthly vs. one-time treatment
  • What each visit includes
  • How to know if your current schedule is working

Why Florida Homes Need More Frequent Treatment

Three factors set Florida apart from most of the country when it comes to pest activity:

  • No hard freeze: In northern states, winter kills off a significant percentage of outdoor insect populations. In Fort Myers, the average winter low is still in the mid-50s, which is warm enough for most pest species to stay active and breeding.
  • Year-round humidity: Lee County averages 73% relative humidity. Pests like cockroaches, silverfish, and ants need moisture to survive, and our climate delivers it every day of the year.
  • Dense vegetation: The tropical landscaping that makes Southwest Florida beautiful also creates ideal habitat for pests within feet of your home. Palm trees, mulch beds, and flowering shrubs all harbor pest populations.

A pest control product applied to your home's exterior in a northern state might remain effective for 4 to 6 months. That same product in Fort Myers, exposed to intense UV, heavy rain, and high humidity, breaks down in 60 to 90 days. That is why quarterly treatment is the standard in Southwest Florida.

Quarterly Service: The Standard for Most Homes

Quarterly pest control means a professional treatment every 90 days, or 4 times per year. Each visit refreshes the exterior perimeter barrier, treats any new activity found during the inspection, and addresses seasonal pest shifts (for example, more ant activity in spring, more palmetto bugs during summer rains).

For a typical Fort Myers single-family home with normal landscaping and no severe existing infestation, quarterly is the most cost-effective frequency. You stay protected year-round without paying for monthly visits you do not need. Most of our customers are on quarterly plans, and they rarely see pests between visits.

When Monthly Service Makes Sense

Monthly pest control is appropriate in specific situations:

  • Active infestations: If you are dealing with a current ant, roach, or rodent problem, monthly visits for 3 to 4 months bring the population under control faster than quarterly alone.
  • Properties near water or wooded areas: Homes on canals, near preserves, or bordering open lots face higher pest pressure and benefit from more frequent barrier refreshes.
  • Heavy landscaping: If your home is surrounded by dense plantings, mulch beds deeper than 3 inches, or fruit trees, the pest pressure is significantly higher.
  • Commercial properties: Restaurants, food storage facilities, and multi-unit properties typically need monthly service to maintain health code compliance.

One-Time Treatment: When It Works

A single treatment makes sense in two scenarios: you are selling your home and need a pest clearance letter, or you have a specific isolated issue (like a wasp nest on the soffit) that does not require ongoing service.

For general pest prevention, one-time treatments are not ideal in Florida because the barrier breaks down before the next pest cycle starts. You end up calling again in 2 to 3 months anyway, and each one-time visit costs more than a quarterly plan visit. Over the course of a year, quarterly is almost always the better value.

How to Know If Your Schedule Is Working

Good pest control should be nearly invisible. If your current plan is working, you should:

  • Rarely see live pests indoors (an occasional palmetto bug after a major storm is normal)
  • Not find ant trails on counters or in bathrooms
  • Not see new fire ant mounds in the yard within 2 weeks of treatment
  • Not hear rodent activity in the attic or walls

If pests are showing up consistently between visits, either the treatment products, application methods, or frequency need adjustment. Talk to your pest control provider. A good company will adjust the plan without charging extra. At SW Florida Pest Authority, we re-treat between visits at no charge if pests return. Check our guarantee page for details.
