Fleas in Southwest Florida

Florida's warm climate means flea season never really ends. Cat fleas (the most common species here) breed year-round outdoors and can turn a minor problem into a full household infestation within two weeks of a pet bringing them inside.

How to Identify Fleas

Look for these specific characteristics before treatment.

  • Tiny, 1-2mm, reddish-brown, flat-bodied and wingless
  • Can jump several inches vertically when disturbed
  • White eggs in pet bedding, carpet, and yard soil
  • Small brown larvae in carpet fibers and upholstery folds
  • Bites around ankles and lower legs in homes without pets
  • Pets scratching, grooming excessively, or showing hair loss

Why Fleas Are a Problem

Fleas transmit tapeworms, cause severe allergic dermatitis in pets, and in heavy infestations can cause anemia in small animals and kittens. Cat fleas are a confirmed vector for murine typhus (flea-borne typhus) and have been linked to transmission in Florida.

How We Treat Fleas

Interior treatment with insect growth regulator (IGR) plus adulticide targets all life stages in carpet and upholstery. Exterior yard treatment addresses the outdoor reservoir. Your pet must be treated by a vet simultaneously for the treatment to be effective. We include a free re-spray if fleas persist after 30 days.

Every treatment plan is tailored to your property and pest pressure. Jason does a full assessment before recommending an approach.

Fleas Questions, Answered

Flea prevention on your pet kills adult fleas that bite, but does not eliminate the eggs, larvae, and pupae already in your carpets and yard. A full house infestation requires treating all life stages simultaneously: your pet, the interior, and the outdoor areas where your pet spends time.
You will see adult fleas for up to 2 weeks after treatment as pupae (which no product penetrates) continue to hatch. This is normal and expected. Vacuuming daily accelerates the process by triggering hatching and increasing contact with treated surfaces. By week 3, populations drop dramatically.
Yes. Flea pupae can remain dormant for months without a host. A home that was previously occupied by pets and then left vacant can have flea populations that activate when new people move in. Pre-purchase inspections of homes with prior pets are a good idea, especially in Florida.
If your pet ever goes outside, even briefly, treating the yard matters. Flea populations in shaded outdoor areas (under decks, in mulch, along fence lines) are the outdoor reservoir that continuously re-exposes your pet. A yard treatment alongside the interior treatment is the most effective approach.
